General Information:

Most of our referees are university/high school students or our club volleyball athletes. They do not have to endure unsportsmanlike conduct from either coaches, parents or players and are instructed to stop a match and have anyone demonstrating such behaviour leave the venue immediately.

The WMVA will strictly follow the MVA and Volleyball Canada Codes of Conduct, and disciplinary actions, please review these codes.

"Volleyball Canada Abuse of an Official"
"Spectators Code of Conduct"
"Volleyball Canada Code of Conduct / Coaches Code of Conduct / Anti-Harassment / Anti-Abuse Policy"

Rules: Indoor Leagues

Serve contacting the net is not a fault. It is not a fault when the serve contacts the net.

Service tossing error. No service tossing errors are allowed under indoor rules. If the server releases the ball for service and does not complete the service, the team will be penalized with the loss of serve and the loss of a point.

Service timing. An athlete has 8 seconds to initiate the serve.

Blocking serves. Athletes may not block a serve.
The block is not a contact. The block is never considered one of the team's three allowable contacts.

Contact with the net. Contact with the net by a player is not a fault, unless it is made during the action of playing the ball, or it interferes with the play. When the ball is driven into the net and causes it to touch an opponent, no fault is committed.

Penetration under the net. It is permitted to penetrate into the opponents' space under the net, provided that this does not interfere with the opponent's play. To touch the opponent's court with a foot (ffet) or hand(s) is permitted, provided that some part of the penetrating foot (feet) or hand(s) remains either in contact with or directly above the centre line. To contact the opponent's court with any other part of the body is forbidden.

Net heights. The net height for bantam girls is 2.10m (in the bottom hole of most net assemblies); Midget girls 2.15m (above the bottom hole of most net assemblies); Juvenile girls 2.24m (in the second hole of most net assemblies).

Switch sides after every game. A match consists of two or three games. Once a game is completed each team switches sides and plays a second game.

Rally scoring. Rally scoring is in effect. Each game to 25 points and a team must win by 2 points. Rally scoring means every rally results in a point whether serving or not.

Penalty for serving out of order. If an out-of-order server is discovered, a penalty is charged.

Position faults. Players must start a rally in their rotation. If a team is out of rotation at the time a serve is initiated the result is a fault and the loss of a point.

Back-row faults. Players must start a rally in their rotation. This conveniently removes all concern about back row attacks/blocks. In 6's competition, however, the indoor rules apply.

Screening rules. Although athletes at the net may raise their arms to reduce the visibilty of athletes on the receiving team, it's illegal for players to wave their arms, jump, or move with the server. Also if athletes are clustered together and the server serves directly over those athletes, at the request of the opposing team, the athletes may be asked to separate or lower their arms.

Timed matches. All WMVA indoor league matches are timed for one hour or 45 minutes (see schedule). At the conclusion of the allowable time the referee will blow the whistle and all play will end. Should the teams not have completed both games as required the winning team will be declared by reviewing the total points from both games played. The team with the most points will be declared the winner.

Warm-up balls. Every team is responsible for their own warm-up balls and medical kits. Teams must also provide one of their warm-up balls as a game ball.

Warm-up session. Teams will be provided with a 5 minute warm-up. Coaches that extend their warm-up need to remember that the result will be reduced playing time.

Coin toss. At the start of every match (during the team warm-up) the referee will ask the team captains in for a review of the rules and the coin toss. the winner of the toss may then elect to serve or may select the side. The loser of the toss may then select the side.
Forbidden Objects. Head decorations, headwear, and jewelry. Eyglasses or lenses can be worn at the player's own risk.

Default and incomplete team. A team with fewer than 6 players must ask other coaches if they have extra players that can play with their team. A team with fewer than 4 players at the start time will be in default. A team with 4-6 players may play with the athletes that are present without defaulting.

Substitutions. All WMVA indoor leagues enjoy unlimited substitutions to facilitate the use of fair play.

Time-outs. Each team will be permitted one time-out per game (set).

The Libero Player. Each team has the right to designate among the list of 12 players one specialized defensive player or "Libero". The libero is allowed to replace any player in a back row position. He/she is restricted to perform as a back-row player and is not allowed to complete an attack hit from anywhere on the court. He/she may not serve or block. Replacements involving the libero are unlimited and the libero can only be replaced by the player he/she replaced.
