Introduction:

Winter registration is now on. Please click on the "League Registration" button on the right-hand side of the page.

The WMVA has two streams of programming for youth. The first is Recreational and the second is High Performance. Our Youth Leagues fall under our recreational programming and are a fair-play environment with teams practicing once during the week and playing on Sunday afternoons.

BENEFITS TO PARTICIPANTS:

  • Team jersey;
  • A fair play environment;
  • Team outings to university matches and/or local sponsors;
  • Awards at two separate tournaments (December and March;
  • Volunteer coaches benefit from a half-price registration fee for their child;
  • A standardized code of conduct for all coaches and athletes.

GENERAL HIGHLIGHTS:

  • For girls 12-18 years of age;
  • For boys 11-14 years of age;
  • Fair play - players rotate in after each side-out;
  • Weeknight team practices held in region athletes live in;
  • WMVA instructors available as guest coaches upon request;
  • All league matches held Sunday afternoons;
  • Two season tournaments - one in December and another in March;
  • Players are separated according to ability, not only their age;
  • Teams are tiered for the winter session so that athletes play against others of their ability;
  • Flexible rules that allow for longer rallies;
  • Matches are two sets to 25 - win by 2. Making for very exciting match play.
General Information:
  • Ideally, teams are able to have some practice time (once during the week) in their area. These are to be provided by the Minor Volleyball Association. Otherwise, if teams prefer, they can participate in the league without practicing.
  • Each team must have a coach or team manager (generally a parent) who will attend weeknight practices and sit with the team during scheduled league games.
  • Each coach/team manager will be provided with a WMVA Drills Manual and access to online resources. The drills can also be explained and demonstrated by the on-sight convenor during early season league play.
  • Each team may borrow a set of "take-home" practice balls. A $10.00 deposit is required for each ball, refundable upon return at the end of the season.

Registration information:

  • Registration is separate for each league season. There is a fall/winter season and a spring season. Athletes can register online or by mail.
  • Register as a  team: Register with your friends and create a team. Each team requires from 8 to 10 players and a team manager/coach. The manager (parent) can facilitate & coordinate the practice schedule and coordinate the pick up of volleyballs and league t-shirts.
  • Register as an Individual:  Register on-line through the online system or by mail and you will be placed on a team depending on breakdown of registrations. All players will attend a general practice at the beginning of the season to ensure that athletes and teams are placed on an appropriate team. Dates will be determined once the need for this is assessed and athletes are contacted by e-mail.

Minor Volleyball Responsibility:

  • To coordinate the league with a tournament style draw, possibly tiering teams and provide a facility for teams to play volleyball in a fun, competitive league.
  • To provide practice volleyballs for various teams (as needed).
  • To educate all participants in the rules of the sport, as well as support general sportsmanship.

The Responsibility of Participating Athletes & Parents:

  • Although an onsight convenor is generally available, all athletes and parents are expected to respect the sport by showing respect for officials and coaches. Disputes can be addressed with the convenor.
Volunteer Development:

Volunteer Based:

WMVA is a community-based, volunteer-driven organization. None of its goals would be attainable without the help of interested and committed volunteers. The following is a brief overview of various positions you might consider that will ultimately help provide all participants with more opportunities to play and develop as a volleyball player.

Coach Development:

A secondary goal of the WMVA is to provide volunteer coaches an opportunity for personal development through the sport of volleyball. To achieve this the WMVA will provide a number of opportunities for volunteer coaches to improve their coaching.

  • Online tools that includes technical info and training videos.
  • Coaches present during the start of league matches to run drills and answer questions.
  • Coaching clinics as called upon.
